Fortresses
Vishegrad
An ancient mountain fortress dating back to the middle ages, where crusaders such as Geoffrey De Villehardouin slept beneath its walls. Nearby is the site of a camp where Henri was proclaimed the 2nd Emperor of the Roman Empire.
Ustra
One of the most well preserved fortresses in the region, situated high on a rocky peak.
Monyak and Karagila Cave
Again a fortress built on a mountain peak but to get there you have to cross a wooden footbridge spanning the beautiful Studen Kladenets. The fortress wall surrounds 50 decares and was built from rough hewn stone. There was a garrison on call to protect the lands and it was another stop over point during the crusades.
Near the fortress is a large cave called Karangila which hosts a rare bat colony.
